Before you deploy a single dollar, you need to understand security. Lose your keys, lose everything. Here's how to protect yourself.
Not Your Keys, Not Your Crypto
In DeFi, YOU are the bank. There's no customer service, no fraud protection, no "forgot password." Security is 100% your responsibility.
Here's the brutal truth: billions of dollars have been lost to hacks, scams, and user error in crypto. And most of it was preventable.
Before you deploy capital into DeFi, you need to understand how wallets work, how to protect yourself, and what scams look like. This isn't optional β it's the foundation of everything.
Your wallet is how you interact with DeFi. There are two main categories:
Your private keys are stored on a physical device that never connects to the internet. Even if your computer is compromised, your crypto is safe.
Browser extension or mobile app. More convenient for daily use, but your keys exist on an internet-connected device. Higher risk.
Keeping crypto on Coinbase, Binance, etc. The exchange controls your keys. If they get hacked or go bankrupt, you could lose everything.
Requires multiple signatures to approve transactions. Great for large holdings or teams. More complex but extremely secure.
Use a hardware wallet for your main holdings. Use a software wallet (like MetaMask) for daily DeFi activities with smaller amounts. Never keep significant funds on exchanges.
When you create a wallet, you get a seed phrase (12 or 24 words). This is the master key to your entire crypto portfolio. Anyone with these words can take everything.
Never store digitally. No photos, no cloud storage, no password managers. Physical only.
Safe deposit box, home safe, trusted family member. If one copy is lost or destroyed, you have backups.
No legitimate service, support team, or protocol will ever ask for your seed phrase. Ever. Anyone asking is a scammer.
Before depositing significant funds, verify you can restore your wallet from the seed phrase.
"Enter your seed phrase to claim your airdrop" β SCAM
"Customer support needs your seed phrase to help" β SCAM
"Input your seed phrase to connect to this dApp" β SCAM
If you're in DeFi long enough, scammers will find you. Here's what to watch for:
Fake websites that look identical to real protocols. You connect your wallet and approve a malicious transaction. Always verify URLs carefully.
"Hey, I'm from [Protocol] support. We noticed an issue with your wallet..." No legitimate team DMs you first. Ever.
Random tokens appear in your wallet. You try to sell them and it drains your wallet. Never interact with unknown tokens.
500% APY on a stable coin? Red flag. If yields seem impossibly high, the protocol is either unsustainable or a straight-up rug pull.
You approve a contract to spend "unlimited" tokens. Later, it drains everything. Always review what you're approving.
Fake accounts pretending to be influencers, projects, or founders. Check follower counts, verification, and account age.
Never share your seed phrase. Not with "support." Not with anyone. Period.
Bookmark official sites. Don't Google protocols β use your bookmarks. Fake sites pay for Google ads.
Verify before you sign. Read what you're approving. If unsure, don't sign. Use tools like Revoke.cash to check approvals.
Use a hardware wallet for significant holdings. Software wallets for small, active DeFi amounts only.
Start small. Test transactions with tiny amounts first. Make sure everything works before going big.
Don't trust DMs. Real support happens in public channels. Anyone DMing you first is trying to scam you.
If it seems too good to be true, it is. 1000% APY? Free money? Run. Fast.
1. Don't panic. Acting fast but calmly is key.
2. Transfer remaining assets to a NEW wallet immediately. The old wallet is burned β never use it again.
3. Revoke all approvals on the compromised wallet using Revoke.cash.
4. Figure out how it happened so you don't repeat the mistake.
Prevention is 100x easier than recovery. Take security seriously before you have significant funds at risk.
Security isn't optional β it's the foundation.
Not your keys, not your crypto.
Seed phrase on paper, hardware wallet for holdings,
and never trust anyone asking for your keys.
